Start with a room you already know. You are sitting in it, and everything in it behaves exactly as it should. The light falls the way light falls. The chair takes your weight. Nothing about the room announces what it is made of, and you have never needed it to.<\/p>\n
Now suppose someone tells you the room is generated \u2014 that the light is a calculation and the chair is a rule about resistance. The first question most people ask is whether they could tell. The more interesting question is what would actually be different if they could not.<\/p>\n
The simulation argument, in its usual form, is a claim about probability rather than physics. If civilisations that can run detailed simulations of conscious beings tend to run many of them, then simulated observers outnumber original ones, and a randomly selected observer is more likely to be one of the many. The reasoning is clean. Whether its premises hold is a separate matter, and one that remains genuinely open.<\/p>\n
Changing the mechanism of creation does not remove the question of why there is anything to run the mechanism on.<\/p>\n
What often goes unexamined is the step that follows. A simulated universe is usually presented as an alternative to a created one \u2014 as though establishing the first would settle the second. But a simulation requires something doing the simulating, and hardware that is itself somewhere. The regress has moved; it has not closed.<\/p>\n
Theology has spent a long time on the difference between a maker who assembles and a ground of being that sustains. A programmer belongs firmly in the first category, which is why the \u201cGod as programmer\u201d framing tends to satisfy nobody who has thought about it from either side. It offers a mechanism where the argument was never about mechanism.<\/p>\n
None of this decides anything. It suggests only that the newer version of the question is recognisably the older one, wearing different equipment.<\/p>\n
